Delta-8 THC (or delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol), is a naturally occurring chemical compound, called a cannabinoid, that’s found in traces in hemp and cannabis THC (D9) plants. Delta-8 produces a euphoric high that's said to be similar to that from THC, but milder. Some people also use it to ease symptoms of conditions like stress, depression, or chronic pain. Research suggests Delta-8 has a slightly weaker attachment to the CB1 receptor than THC (D9), which tempers its effect. Nearly all the Delta-8 you can buy is made in labs with cannabidiol (CBD) from hemp plants along with several chemicals. It’s much more potent than the Delta-8 found in nature. For now, D8 is completely legal on the federal level and available in 38 states. That’s a very appealing offer when the alternative isn’t available anywhere. There are no dangers currently associated with D8 consumption compared to THC (D9), and the high seems to be at least comparable.

Delta-9 (or Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), is a cannabinoid found in cannabis. The psychoactive effects of cannabis are mainly due to THC (D9). There are over 160 cannabinoids in the Cannabis plant, but THC (D9) and cannabidiol (CBD) are the most well-studied. Delta-9 binds to the CB1 and CB2 receptors to produce strong effects throughout the body and mind. Alternatively, CBD does not directly interact with the two cannabinoid receptors but works throughout the endocannabinoid system with specialized enzymes to prevent endocannabinoids from being broken down. It's found in the highest levels in the leaves and flowers of the plant. The therapeutic benefits of THC (D9) include the management of conditions associated with depression, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, resistant childhood seizures, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, convulsions, glaucoma, neuropathic pain and a variety of other conditions. Cannabis was introduced to what is now the United States during the 1600s. Hemp was grown to produce textiles and sometimes even used as legal tender. It was used for a number of medical purposes as well, with its recreational use beginning to grow during the 1930s and 1940s.

Delta-10 THC (or Delta-10-Tetrahydrocannabinol), reportedly produces an uplifting and relaxing effect. It’s free from the intense euphoria that other THC compounds can have. The milder cannabinoid may be beneficial for mitigating stress, lifting low moods, and boosting energy. Since Delta-10 THC produces feelings of relaxation, it shouldn’t cause any anxiety or negative side effects than can come with strong Delta-9 products. This makes Delta-10 a good choice for soothing anxiety without feeling sedated. Delta-10 THC was actually discovered by accident. It was found at a farm in California when extracting THC distillate from a batch of cannabis that was contaminated with fire retardant. It formed these mysterious crystals that were originally misidentified as CBC and CBL (other cannabinoids), and then properly identified as Delta-10 THC. Today, Delta-10 is made using a conversion process similar to the one used for producing Delta-8 concentrate. Since Delta-10 is a form of THC, it has the potential to get you high. Delta-10 high is said to be less intense than Delta-9 and Delta-8. It’s also said to be more of a head buzz than a full body high. Delta-10 THC tends to have an even weaker affinity for binding to the CB1 receptors than Delta-8, resulting in milder effects. According to some users, the effects of Delta-10 are more akin to a sativa high versus an indica one, typically with less paranoia and anxiety.

THC-P (or Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabiphoral), is a cannabinoid related closely to THC and found in very low concentrations in the cannabis plant. THC-P is a recently discovered cannabinoid that can be produced in a laboratory by altering legal hemp-derived CBD. It was found accidentally by Italian researchers in 2019 during analysis of a particular marijuana strain. THC-P interacts with the endocannabinoid system similarly to THC but with a far greater affinity for cannabinoid receptors. The research found that THC-P binds to CB1 receptors up to 33 times more often than traditional THC, which means THC-P is potentially up to 33 times as potent as THC. THC-P is unique because of its longer alkyl side chains: the string of carbon atoms is much longer than traditional THC (seven carbons vs. five carbons). This makes the cannabinoid attach more securely to receptors throughout the body. Thus, it takes a much smaller amount of THC-P to impact different functions governed by the endocannabinoid system (ECS) than for THC to have the same effect. In fact, tiny (and previously unnoticed) amounts of THC-P in existing marijuana strains may already be responsible for some of cannabis’ known healing powers. The scientists who found THC-P in 2019 wrote that “the discovery of an extremely potent THC-like phytocannabinoid may shed light on several pharmacological effects not found yet in marijuana."

THC-V (or Tetrahydrocannabivarin), is one of the latest minor cannabinoids found in some hemp and marijuana strains that has been gaining a lot of attention. THC-V and THC (D9) share a very similar molecular structure. THC-V is a homolog of THC (D9). A homolog is a molecule that has a similar structure or function to another molecule. Both molecules have a nearly identical chemical structure and bind to the same receptors in the brain to produce their effects. The main advantage of THC-V over THC is the lack of psychoactive effects. In rodent studies, THC-V decreases appetite, increases satiety, and up-regulates energy metabolism, making it a clinically useful remedy for weight loss and management of obesity and type 2 diabetic patients.

THC-H (or Tetrahydrocannabihexol), is a phytocannabinoid that scientists discovered in 2019. THC-H is a unique cannabinoid that distinguishes itself with a longer n-hexyl side chain composed of six carbons, setting it apart from THC (D9), which has a 5-carbon side chain. Just as THC-P can bind more receptively with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain because of its longer side chain, THC-H is exactly the same. In fact, THC-H chemicals attach to receptors with 25% greater affinity than THC (D9). THC-H can produce a range of effects that vary massively. Some people report moods characterized by a relaxed and mellow feeling. Others report feeling energetic, euphoric, or creative.

HHC (or Hexahydrocannabinol), was first isolated in 1944 by chemist Roger Adams, when he added hydrogen molecules to Delta-9 THC. This process, called hydrogenation, converts THC (D9) , to hexahydrocannabinol (HHC). While Adams created HHC from conventional THC, these days the cannabinoid is typically isolated through a process that begins with hemp. HHC is thought to possess psychoactive qualities, yet its effects are generally gentler compared to Delta-9 THC. Many users find the HHC experience to be more clear-minded, concentrated, and less overwhelming, potentially leading to fewer common side effects. This friendly characteristic of HHC makes it an appealing option for those seeking a milder experience. The anti-emetic properties of cannabinoids, including HHC, could make it useful for individuals experiencing nausea due to various causes. In the same way that other cannabinoids stimulate appetite, HHC might be helpful for those struggling with appetite suppressing conditions, or patients undergoing treatment that affects their appetite. Also there is some evidence that cannabinoids, including HHC, may have neuroprotective properties, suggesting benefits for persons with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

HHC-P (or Hexahydrocannabiphorol), is an entirely synthetic cannabinoid that exists by hydrogenating the naturally occurring THC-P. HHC-P is far more potent than HHC, however, it depends on the user. For some, they’ll find that the HHC-P has an effect similar to THC, while others will experience it to be ten times as effective as THC and more than twenty times more effective than HHC. This is because it has more bioavailability than THC; however, people with higher tolerances to THC will experience less significant highs from HHC-P. HHC-P has the same structure as HHC but with two more carbons in its alkaline chain than HHC. Researchers believe HHC-P’s additional carbons increase its ability to bind with cannabinoid receptors in the brain and nervous system. HHC-P is known to give a sense of relief and relaxation, better mood and a strong feeling of euphoria

THCA (or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), is the precursor to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). When cannabis is growing it makes cannabinoids as carboxylic acids that most often convert into non-acidic compounds through a process called decarboxylation. Almost all cannabinoids start off in their acidic form which have differing structures and effects than that of their non-acidic versions. When smoking cannabis you are decarboxylating it converting the THCA into regular THC (D9). To take it a step further, THCA stems from cannabigerol (CBG), which is known as the mother cannabinoid. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), CBN (Cannabinol), CBT (Cannabicitran), THC-V (tetrahydrocannabivarin), and other constituents of the cannabis plant are said to stem from the continuous oxidation of CBGVA.
