Cannabis history in Albania:
Albania does not have a long documented history with cannabis, although the start can be traced back to 1991, when Grecian criminal groups began to establish cannabis plantations in southern areas near the Greek border. The local Albanian farmers saw the opportunity to have some financial stability in the days of the turbulent economy back then. The new industry took off and by 1995 it was not uncommon to see gunfights between farmers and the police back then. The Italian mafia later got involved in the area, with the boats carrying their crops speeding over the Ionian sea.
Cannabis in Albania Today:
Cannabis was legalized for medical use on July 21st 2023 and 61% support legalization. So we hope that the future holds recreational legalization for the citizens of Albania very soon!
